When Do I Need To Extract A Tooth?

When a tooth cannot be saved, extracting it is typically the best solution. Especially if you’re in severe pain or there is a chronic infection. Our Artarmon dentist may recommend removing your tooth if there is:

• Aggressive, non-restorable decay
• A severe fracture or crack
• Pain from an emergency
• Severe periodontal disease and bone loss
• Advanced infection or facial swelling

Saving vs. Removing A Tooth

Sometimes the best thing to do for your smile is to preserve the natural teeth you already have. But if restorative therapies such as a crown or root canal cannot restore your tooth, removing it may be the only way to prevent the spread of infection into adjacent teeth.

What To Expect?

Dental extractions can range from quite simple procedures to more complex treatments. Much of it will depend on the tooth and factors related to why it needs to be removed. To ensure your comfort, we thoroughly numb the entire site around the tooth so that all you will feel is a bit of pressure.

We recommend taking an anti-inflammatory and applying a cold compress on and off every 20 minutes for the first 12-24 hours following your procedure to limit swelling.

Dr Chung will also help you develop a plan to replace your missing tooth, such as with a dental implant or bridge.

What If I Am Nervous?

Being anxious about a tooth extraction is quite common. We want to remind you that we’re here to help. There’s no pressure to rush through your procedure, especially if your mouth is sensitive.

Anesthetic will be adjusted to ensure you don’t have to feel anything during the visit. It’s probably best to take a couple of days off after your extraction to recover. If your mouth is sore, we can prescribe a pain killer to alleviate the discomfort. Our office will follow up with you a few days after to ensure that you’re recovering nicely.

Having extra space in your smile can lead to shifting and movement of your remaining teeth. To avoid irregular wear patterns, potential TMJ disorder and abnormal tooth wear, Dr Chung recommends replacing your tooth in a timely manner. In most cases, a dental implant is the best solution (as implants are non-invasive to other teeth).

About Extractions

REMOVE A TOOTH, KEEP A SMILE

Usually the only alternative to having a tooth removed is to treat it with a root canal or filling. However, if Dr Chung feels that there’s not enough structure left to support either restoration, he’ll discourage it. If you still want to pursue a root canal but the tooth doesn’t last, you can put that investment toward a replacement, such as a dental implant.
